The historic Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is once again coming back to Winchester this year as it celebrates its 90th anniversary. With reaching such an incredible milestone, this year’s festival will be sure not to disappoint. The 90th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival will take place this year from April 28 through May 7. What is the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival?

For those unaware, the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, or The Bloom for short, is a 9-day traditional celebration of the arrival of spring and the pink and white apple blossoms in the area. The festival often brings in nearly 250,000 or more people each year. The Bloom includes many fun events, sights and activities for people of all ages to enjoy, such as dances, luncheons, parades, live music, a 10K run, craft shows, fireworks, car shows, celebrity appearances and even more. The festival is then topped with the Coronation of Queen Shenandoah.

Coronating the new Queen Shenandoah is a tradition that stems from the first ever Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival on April 22, 1924. The original format of the event included the Coronation of Queen Shenandoah and the Grand Feature Parade, which both remain as some of the most important events of the festival today. Nominations and invitations are used to find the new Queen Shenandoah each year, and they are then elected through a process of festival organizers, past queens, celebrities and political figures.

This year’s event will also feature former NFL Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward as the Festival Sports Marshal. After his football career, Ward has made appearances on “Dancing with the Stars,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and The Walking Dead.”
