New Driver on the Road!
What type of vehicle is best for new drivers?
Having a new driver in the house can be exciting and terrifying all at the same time. You are excited that your child can now drive himself or herself to sports, theater, or other practices every day, but you also now worry about him or her driving alone on the road. You really want to make sure that the vehicle your child drives will keep him or her as safe as possible. Keep reading as we explore what type of vehicle is best for new drivers!
Is a car or an SUV a better choice?
This can be a tricky question to answer. Many cars and SUVs come with a ton of standard safety and driver-assist features. Some of these include Forward-Collision Avoidance, Blind-Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and many more. While these do not replace the good habits that were learned in Driver’s Ed, there is a peace of mind that goes along with having these extra technologies. It is not recommended that a new driver drives a tiny car or a very small sedan. The car should be decently heavy so that it will not slip around during inclement weather. Some examples of cars and SUVs that would be good options include the following:
Volkswagen Passat- Ford Fusion
- Honda Accord
- Subaru Outback
- Lincoln MKZ
- Buick LaCrosse
- Toyota Avalon
- Chevrolet Impala
- Honda CR-V
- Kia Sportage
- Nissan Murano
- GMC Terrain
- Hyundai Santa Fe

What model year should I pick for my child?
While we are sure you would like to pick up a new vehicle with top of the line safety features, we know that this is probably not realistic as brand new vehicles are quite pricey. Instead, you can purchase a vehicle that is five, six, or even seven years old! In general, as long as the vehicle you purchase is newer than 2014, many of the safety features that are important to you are available.
