What to Look For When Test Driving a Vehicle

One fear car buyers seem to have is the lack of knowledge of what to look for when they are test driving a vehicle. Take a look at our list below of the top clues to look for when you take a used vehicle for a spin, and hopefully you can feel more confident in your buying decision.

Outside the Vehicle

• Examine the tires
• Look under the vehicle for fluid leaks
• Squat at the front of the vehicle and look straight down for any signs of body repair
• Open and close all doors to check for fitting
• Ask the salesmen to operate the headlights, brake lights, and turn signals so you can see them from the outside
• Lift up the mats or carpet and check for signs of rust
• Check if there is an air freshener or if it smells as though the vehicle has just been sprayed with a scent. If so, open the windows and doors and let it air out so you can get a better idea of the natural smell of your vehicle

During the Drive

• Be sure to take the vehicle over 60 miles per hour to see if there is any shaking or vibrating felt in the vehicle
• Listen for any odd noises while you accelerate
• Allow your hands to ease off the steering wheel and see if the vehicle pulls to either side
• Listen and feel if the transmission shifts smoothly
• Apply pressure to the brakes and make sure they feel firm and not squishy
