How to Get Rid of Gravel Driveway Potholes

Step 1: Clean Out Debris
You’ll need a tamper, some coarse gravel, gravel that matches the driveway surface, and a shovel.
Before you fill the hole, be sure to dig out any loose soil or rocks from the hole. You might need to dig down and out a little to find firm walls. This will help to ensure the patch stays in place for as long as possible.

Step 2: Fill The Pothole
Fill the hole to about 3 inches below the surface of the driveway with coarse gravel and pack it down. Look up instructions to create a homemade tamper, or rent a construction grade tool. Fill the last 3 inches of the hole with gravel that matches the rest of the surface of the driveway.
If you have a dirt driveway, overfill the hole a bit and then water the patch and press it down firmly.

Step 3: Ensure It’s Packed
To finish the patch, you’ll want to ensure everything is packed down. The easiest way to do this is to drive your vehicle over it a few times.
If you’d like to prevent potholes in the future, consider creating a slope down either side of your driveway, with the center being the high-point. This will keep drainage from collecting and creating more holes to fill.
