With school out and hot days ahead, many families decide to head off on fun road trips for the summer in their new or used vehicles. Use this summer road trip car checklist to make sure you and your family get your vacation off to a good start.
- 1. Take Emergency Supplies.A first-aid kit is wise to have on hand. Include water, snacks, a flashlight, basic tools, and blankets as well.
- 2. Stay Within Your Load Capacity.Every vehicle has a weight limit. You might want to take your whole house with you, but that’s not always a great idea. Know your vehicle’s load capacity and stay well within it.
- 3. Take Stuff for the Kids.Long road trips can be hard for the little ones. To preserve your sanity as parents, make sure there are snacks, drinks, games, music, and even videos to keep them occupied.
- 4. Bring a Navigation System.If your car doesn’t have one built in, consider getting an external GPS to keep you from losing time and getting lost.
- 5. Inspect the Brakes.You want maximum stopping power when you’re carrying precious cargo and extra weight. Check the brake pads and make sure the fluid level is adequate before starting on the road.
- 6. Check the Battery.Batteries need clean terminals for optimum performance. You can clean dirty ones with a little water and baking soda. If your battery is more than five years old, you might consider replacing it.
- 7. Check the Tires.Packing your vehicle up with heavy luggage can put extra pressure on the tires. Make sure the rubber is in good condition, then check the air pressure. Look at the tire to find out what the air pressure should be.
- 8. Have Your Vehicle Serviced.Get your car in to be serviced by professionals. They can usually provide a summer checkup to make sure you’re good to go.
- 9. Exercise Patience.A lot of people travel in the summer. If you’re going to popular vacation destinations, be sure to keep your calm even in traffic. It makes for safer driving for everyone.
- 10. Practice Safety.Understand the road laws wherever you are traveling and always buckle up.
