Used Vehicle Age and Mileage: Newer with Fewer or Older with More?

Some people swear by purchasing a 10 to 15-year-old vehicle, stating that they “don’t make them like they used to.” Other say that buying a 2 to 3-year-old used vehicle will give you the best bang for your buck without most of the used-car headaches.

So, which is it? Should you get a newer car with few miles or an older car with more?

Newer Model Year, Fewer Miles

Newer vehicles with fewer miles on them will have many of the features available on the current model year. Newer vehicles are also more likely to be certified pre-owned (CPO), meaning that they’ll be OEM certified to reach a high level of quality assurance. Many CPO vehicles will also have warranties, negating one of the biggest drawbacks of buying a used vehicle. Here at CrossPointe, many of our vehicles have our very own Lifetime Powertrain warranty.

Older Model Year, More Miles

Older cars with more mileage will always be cheaper up front (assuming the car isn’t a collector’s item). However, repairs and part replacements will most likely be more frequent here than on a newer model vehicle with fewer miles. Parts for these vehicles are widespread and easily available, though, making them cheap to buy brand new and dirt cheap to buy from a salvage yard. If you’re a DIY mechanic, this often means that you can repair your own vehicle for little more than it costs to buy the parts and the gas it took to go and get them.
