You may have heard from friends or family about making some pretty decent cash by doing food deliveries during the pandemic. This might be confusing given the policy of social distancing that federal agencies and the federal government has recommended. For instance, how are you supposed to stay six feet away from people if delivering food involves handing food to someone?

Is delivering food safe?

As long as you avoid getting within six feet of another person (by leaving their food on their doorstep or something similar), wear the proper respiratory protection, and wash/sanitize your hands in-between deliveries, delivering food is relatively low risk. The FDA has stated that “currently there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19” as “[COVID-19] is a virus that causes respiratory illness.” However, if you do deliver food, you are at more of a risk of contracting COVID-19 than you would be by following CDC guidelines and staying home and self-isolating. We understand that staying home isn’t going to pay the bills, though. We recommend that you consider the CDC guidelines, your state’s directives, and the federal government’s recommendations when you make your decision.

Why is hand-washing so important?

COVID-19 is a virus. A virus is just a long string of proteins bound together. That means, just like other proteins such as animal fat or butter, soap and water break down the bonds that hold the molecules together, which destroys the virus. By washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, you destroy and virus that may present on them, which drastically reduces your chances of infection.
