How To Inspect A Used Car

Whether you buy from a dealership or a private seller, here are the essentials of how to inspect a used car.

Engine

Look at the hoses, belts, battery, and radiator for a start. Any rubber should be firm and not cracked or soft. Check the charge indicator on the battery and make sure the radiator coolant is green or orange, but not rusty. Also, look for coolant stains, as that could be a sign of a leak. Inspect the various fluids to ensure proper coloring and volume.

Body

Look over the outside of the vehicle for signs of damage. Some scratches and wear and tear is normal; you want to make sure the suspension is level and that the lights and lenses are in proper working condition. Be wary of buying an older car with new tires as that’s a sign of the odometer being rolled back. Check for chips or cracks in the auto glass.

Interior

Note any smells in the vehicle, including the trunk. Moldy, mildew smells are a sign of water leaks. If you don’t like the smell of the vehicle, don’t buy it. Sit in all of the seats to make sure you like how comfortable they are. Ensure all the instruments and controls work properly.

Independent Inspection
