How to Drive Safely Through Fog
Today, many vehicles receive upgrades to their safety technology and features that help prevent deaths or injuries on the road. However, there are some dangers of driving we can’t avoid or do anything about, especially when dealing with weather. One of the most difficult kinds of weather to drive in is heavy fog, so we wanted to offer a few tips on how to drive safely through fog.
While there are so many ways to drive safely through fog, there are three main precautions to take when driving in fog.
Be Sure to Slow Down and Keep a Safe Distance From Cars – Fog makes it incredibly difficult to see when driving. It is safe for drivers to slow down on the road, and to make sure to keep a safe distance away from other vehicles to have enough reaction time to avoid a possible collision. However, don’t slow down too much where you could be in the way of an upcoming vehicle, as they could be going faster than you and unable to see you up ahead.- Turn on Low Beams or Fog Lights – Turning on your low beam headlights or fog lights is one of the best ways to let other drivers know where you are on the road. When some vehicle colors blend in with the fog, having your lights on is a must. Try to avoid using your high beam lights, as the light could reflect off of some of the water droplets in the air and impact another driver’s vision even more.
- Follow the Line on the Right Side of the Road – When driving through heavy fog, it can be very difficult to see where your car is on the road, or even which lane you’re in. If you are unsure where you are in terms of other cars, drive alongside the line painted on the right side of the road, as it can help keep you on the road and guide you through upcoming turns.
