Find out how Fuel Efficient Your Vehicle is With These Easy Steps
How to Calculate Your Gas Mileage
Whenever you’re looking to buy a new vehicle, gas mileage is one of the most important aspects to look into. While car manufacturers offer customers fuel economy ratings for their new vehicles, it is always beneficial to see how fuel efficient your vehicle is. We wanted to show you how to calculate your gas mileage in just a few easy steps.
-
Write down your vehicle’s odometer reading (mileage) and completely fill up your gas tank.
-
When you have to to back and refuel your car, write down how many gallons of gas it took to fill the gas tank, and also write down the second odometer reading.
-
Now subtract the first odometer reading from the new one.
-
Take the difference of the two readings, and divide that number by the number of gallons it took to fill up the gas tank. Once you do this, you will have successfully calculated your gas mileage for that trip.
However, no gas mileage test can completely and accurately predict your vehicle’s exact fuel economy. This is due to the ever-changing driving conditions, driver behavior, vehicle maintenance and much more that each can have an impact on fuel efficiency.

How do Car Manufacturers Determine Fuel Economy?
The way that various car manufacturers determine the fuel economy of their vehicle is through lab tests. The EPA then re-examines nearly 10 percent of all vehicles to confirm if the lab test results found by the manufacturers were accurate.
