Civil War Weekend 2017 Events you Shouldn’t Miss in Winchester VA

Civil War Weekend is coming back once again to the Winchester area. While there is plenty to do at places such as the Belle Grove Plantation and Kernstown Battlefield, there are so many opportunities to learn about the area’s role during the Civil War. Even if you have the Civil War Weekend of August 18-20 filled up with events, here are a few Civil War Weekend 2017 events you shouldn’t miss in Winchester, VA.

Starting at 10am on Saturday, August 19, is the Storms and Thunder at Star Fort event at Star Fort and Second Winchester. Put on by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, this free event teaches people about the history of Winchester’s defense during the second and third battles of Winchester. The 5-hour-long event features programs such as history lessons, artillery demonstrations and presentations on Star Fort and Second Winchester.

The McCormick Civil War Institute is hosting an event called “A Gleam of Anxious Speculation: The African Americans’ Civil War in Winchester.” People can meet at the Winchester-Frederick County Visitors Center lead by the director of the institute to learn about the experiences of African Americans during the Civil War.
