Domestic Cars vs Foreign Service and Repair Costs

For the most part, cars from different countries will cost around the same to fix as a domestic one as long as they occupy the same market segment. So, while a mid-tier Ford F-150 may be cheaper to fix than a BMW M5 or an Acura NSX, that same F-150 may cost more to service than a Honda Fit or Volkswagen Jetta. The more technology and complex engineering your vehicle has, the more it will cost to fix. That’s assuming that access to any given brands service department is about the same. Which is not always the case.

The Exceptions

If repairs and replacement parts for a foreign vehicle cost more, it’s most likely due to one of two things: 1. Tariffs; 2. A mismatch in the car you drive and the area you live in. If you own a Maserati in a rural area where the nearest dealer is across a state line, then yes, the scarcity of that service is going to drive costs up. However, most cars that go for $30,000-$40,000 brand-new will have local access with specialized professionals that have access to the parts and tools needed for repairs and service.
