Learn History of Winchester at the Kernstown Battlefield

157th Anniversary of the First Battle of Kernstown 

Even though the United States is a relatively young country still, we still have a lot of history. One of the most important periods in our country was the Civil War, taking place back in the 1800s. While it was a large-scale war, we still can preserve and teach about the history of these huge events. That’s why the Kernstown Battlefield Association is celebrating the 157th anniversary of the First Battle of Kernstown. 

Taking place on the weekend of Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24, the Kernstown Battlefield Association is commemorating the 157th anniversary of the First Battle of Kernstown in Winchester. In fact, history buffs are in for a treat, as Gary L. Ecelbarger, the author of “We Are In For It!” a book about the battle, will be giving a tour of the battlefield starting at 9am on March 23. As attendees soak in great information, lunch will be provided by Shaffer’s BBQ and tours will continue afterward.

The Valley Guards, the 10th Virginia Infantry, will be making an appearance on both Saturday and Sunday. During the anniversary celebration, the Valley Guards will be doing living history demonstrations for guests.
