Where the Name Crossover Comes From

Crossovers are called that because they blend two different types of vehicles, crossing over from one automotive segment into another. Specifically, crossovers blend the body style, higher ride height, and AWD capability of SUVs with the unibody construction, smaller engines, and higher efficiency of cars. This has many benefits for the average driver, including smoother ride quality, lighter weight, similar cargo space dimensions, and lower prices, as well as the aforementioned benefits. There are some downsides, though. Namely, crossovers are awful when it comes to towing and heavy-duty off-roading, which are things SUVs excel at, thanks to body-on-frame construction, big, naturally aspirated engines, and locking differentials.

How are Crossovers Different from Hatchbacks?

Crossovers, particularly compact and subcompact crossovers like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, or Hyundai Kona, have almost completely usurped the hatchback segment. That’s because they offer the improved cargo space and high fuel economy of hatchbacks, but with higher ride heights and improved drivetrain options.
