The state of Virginia has beauty throughout it, but that’s particularly true in the Shenandoah Valley! In this area, there are tons of vantage points from Skyline Drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where you can see gorgeous views. Whether you’re standing on high elevations or sitting on the Valley floor, you will find an area of the Shenandoah Valley that you will love. Below we have selected four road trip routes to meander, and along these routes, you can stop and explore many small towns while immersed in the beauty of the state.
Wilderness Road
The Wilderness Road, also known as route 11, is a route that will take you right through the heart of Shenandoah Valley. It was created by migrating bison and Native Americans who followed them and was then expanded by European settlers who migrated to the Valley. Since the 18th century, it has been known as Wilderness Road, and it connects several Shenandoah Valley towns from Martinsburg, WV, all the way to Roanoke. You can make several stops along the way as you can eat breakfast, take a walk in Old Town in Winchester, and then head south to tour Belle Grove National Historic Park in Middletown. If you want to have more scenery to look at, you can take a 50-mile trip from Staunton to National Bridge State Park. Staunton has several breweries to make a stop at, and if you have time check out Steeles Tavern Manor, which was built in 1916 and is located between Staunton and Lexington.
Route 340
Traveling along route 340 will take you from Harpers Ferry to Waynesboro, where beauty can be found. Front Royal is located in the northern part of Shenandoah Valley and provides you with an excellent passageway to Shenandoah National Park and all of its gorgeous views. Around eight miles south of Front Royal is the Shenandoah River State Park, which provides lovely views and is a perfect place to go hiking, biking, horseback riding, or canoeing. Continue going south, and you’ll reach the humungous Massanutten Mountain, which will be on your right. Keep going, and you will reach Luray and its active downtown.
Appalachian Waters Scenic Byway
The Appalachian Water Scenic Byway starts at Lexington, and you can take it all the way to West Virginia. The 23-mile stretch from Lexington to Goshen provides gorgeous views of the Maury River. Make sure to stop at Goshen Pass to give you a good view of the river’s power. You can also take some time to explore the Goshen Pass Natural Area Preserve, as it features 937 achers of hiking trails and natural swimming holes. Don’t be in a hurry to exit Lexington, but if you’re in a bind, take a stroll Downtown on the area’s brick sidewalks, where you can check out historic buildings, farm-to-table restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques. You might want to think about planning a weekend here!
Route 608
The final stop on your journey will lead you through route 608, which will give you a “get away from it all” feeling. This route is filled with a ton of farmsteads and mountain views that are sure to take your breath away. We recommend exploring the Grand Caverns in Grottoes, then head down 40-miles to Vesuvius. Stop and look around Stuarts Draft as John Colter of Louis and Clarks Expedition was born here. Failing that, stop at New Hope, where you can see where the Battle of Piedmont was waged on June 5, 1864.
